1920s Akimel O’odham basket, hand-coiled from willow and devil’s claw. The large, deep bowl features a bold radiating design, with light willow contrasting against the naturally dark devil’s claw.

The Akimel O’odham, historically referred to as the Pima, are the “River People” of central and southern Arizona. Their communities along the Gila and Salt Rivers developed a distinguished basketry tradition, producing tightly coiled bowls and trays for gathering, food preparation, storage, and trade. Large early examples such as this required extensive preparation of native plants and many hours of skilled weaving.
