1910 Maidu Basket
Circa 1910 Maidu basket from Northern California, hand-coiled from willow with redbud used to create the rich reddish-brown geometric pattern. The finely woven bowl has a graceful rounded form and a carefully finished rim.
The traditional Maidu homeland encompasses portions of the Sacramento Valley and the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. Basketry was central to daily life, with baskets made in numerous forms for gathering, preparing, cooking, serving, and storing food. Maidu basket makers are particularly admired for their tightly controlled coiling and the warm contrast created by natural willow and redbud.
