1920s Akimel O’odham basket, hand-coiled from willow and devil’s claw. The broad bowl features a strong whirling geometric pattern that expands outward from the center.

The Akimel O’odham, “River People,” historically called Pima, developed one of Arizona’s most distinguished basketry traditions along the Gila and Salt Rivers. Willow provided the warm natural ground, while dark devil’s claw was woven into the basket to create its contrasting designs and finished rim.
