1920s Navajo Crystal Weaving

Early 20th-century Navajo Crystal weaving, circa 1920s, handwoven in wool with a bold geometric composition of stepped forms, directional arrow motifs, and small diamond elements. The palette combines natural shades of brown, gray, and ivory with vivid red accents, giving the weaving a strong graphic quality while still preserving the subtle tonal variation of handspun wool.

The Crystal weaving tradition developed around the Crystal Trading Post in northwestern New Mexico, where Navajo weavers became known for sophisticated geometric compositions and the use of natural wool colors accented with red. Early Crystal weavings often feature terraced forms, strong symmetry, and finely balanced negative space, all of which are especially evident in this example.
