Coins have a long history in Navajo silverwork. Early silversmiths melted down American and Mexican coins as their source of silver, and coins later became a decorative element in their own right. The Buffalo Nickel, minted from 1913 to 1938 and designed by James Earle Fraser, remains a favorite for its bison design.
