1980s Hopi Sunface Buckle
Tribe: Hopi
1980s Sterling Silver Belt Buckle by Hopi artist Benjamin Mansfield, featuring an overlay design centered around Tawa, the Hopi Sunface, rising above a stylized landscape. Radiating lines, clouds, distant mountains, and geometric elements surround the central figure, creating a dramatic Southwestern scene across the face of the buckle.
Mansfield was a highly regarded Hopi silversmith from Shungopavi Village and the son of noted artist Vernon Mansfield. He began producing jewelry around 1983 and became particularly known for his crisp, clean overlay work; the Tawa/Sunface was one of his favored subjects. Signed on the reverse with Mansfield’s distinctive antelope-head hallmark.
