1970s Lidded Tohono O’Odham Basket

1970s Tohono O’odham lidded basket woven in the traditional split-stitch technique. Bundled beargrass forms the underlying coils, which are secured and decorated with split yucca. The open split-stitch construction creates broad radiating bands across the rounded body and an intricate star-like pattern across the fitted lid.

The natural contrast between the golden beargrass and pale yucca emphasizes the sculptural construction of the basket. The matching lid is finished with the same open stitch work, creating an especially attractive and finely detailed miniature vessel.
