1950s Tohono O’Odham Lidded Basket
Tribe: Tohono O'Odham
1950s traditional coiled Tohono O’odham basket with fitted lid, handwoven from natural desert plant fibers including beargrass and yucca, with darker devil’s claw used to create the geometric design. The basket features repeating bands and stepped motifs around the body, echoed by concentric decoration across the lid.
The Tohono O’odham have a longstanding basketry tradition in southern Arizona, using locally gathered desert materials to create tightly coiled baskets for both practical and decorative purposes.
Vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use, including some missing stitches and a missing handle from the center of the lid.
