Hopi Flute Kachina

The Flute Kachina, or Leenang, is associated with rain, fertility, renewal, and the success of the growing season. In Hopi tradition, the Flute Katsina is described as a ceremonial leader whose flute music carries prayers outward and helps bring rain, health, and abundant crops. The colorful flower-like elements of the headdress are also traditionally associated with the beauty of the earth and the four directions.

Calnimptewa has rendered the figure in remarkable detail, including the elaborate feathered headdress, turquoise-colored face, painted regalia, jewelry, sash, and ceremonial staff. The carving is signed on the base.

This exceptional piece was awarded First Place at the 104th Annual SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market, accompanied by its blue ribbon.
