1980s Navajo Ceremonial Basket

1980s Hand-coiled Navajo ceremonial basket by Joyce Love, woven from sumac in the traditional wedding basket design. The basket features the characteristic concentric composition with a central opening and pathway extending outward through the design.

Natural and dyed sumac create the cream, dark brown, and red patterning. The stepped and radiating elements are arranged in the traditional ceremonial format associated with Navajo wedding baskets, which are used in ceremonies as well as collected for their craftsmanship and symbolic design.
The basket has a broad, shallow form with tightly executed coil work and a clean, balanced composition.
