1920s Akimel O’odham basket, hand-coiled from willow and devil’s claw. The compact, upright form is decorated with repeating human figures rendered in dark devil’s claw against the warm willow ground.

The Akimel O’odham, “River People,” historically called Pima, are renowned for their coiled basketry traditions in Arizona’s Gila and Salt River valleys. Human figures are less common than the geometric and whirlwind patterns typically found on Akimel O’odham baskets, giving this example particular visual and cultural interest.
