Old-Style Hopi Home Dancer, Hemis, Kachina by Hopi artist Brennan Garcia. The Hemis Kachinas appear during the Niman or Home Dance, the final ceremony of the Hopi Katsina season in July. Their cloud-form headdresses represent cumulus clouds, while the dance carries prayers for rain and an abundant corn harvest before the Kachinas return to the spirit world.

Hand-carved and painted from cottonwood root in the traditional old style, with feather, fur, yarn, and hide accents. Old-style Kachinas are traditionally made for hanging, and this carving includes a loop on the back for wall display.
