Hopi Ahola Kachina
Tribe: Hopi
Item #HK02050
Hand-Carved and Painted Hopi Chief (Ahola) Kachina. A wide fan of carved feathers radiates around his rounded mask, and he wears a fur ruff and a white robe with a painted sash, holding a feathered staff in his right hand and a sheep scapula rattle in his left. One of the important chief kachinas for Hopi First and Second Mesas, Ahola opens the midwinter Powamu ceremony, sometimes called the bean planting festival, and at its close bows four times to the Sun at a shrine, asking for health, happiness, long life, and good crops.
