1930s Beaded Paiute Basket
Small 1930s Paiute handwoven sumac basket. The coiled basketry foundation is overlaid with colorful glass seed beads in vivid shades of green, blue, yellow, orange, red, purple, and white. Geometric and floral designs encircle the rounded body, while an eight-pointed star decorates the base. A scalloped rim completes the lively, sculptural form.
Beaded baskets such as this were created in the Yosemite-Mono Lake region during the early 20th century, combining traditional Paiute basketry with elaborate beadwork intended for collectors and visitors.
