Hopi Longhair Kachina

Hopi Longhair Katsina, Angak’china, by Hopi carver Norbert Tewa. Hand-carved from cottonwood root and mounted on a natural cottonwood base. The figure is rendered with the characteristic long black hair, feather elements, turquoise-colored face, painted sash and kilt, moccasins, and ceremonial objects held in each hand.

The Long Hair Katsina, known in Hopi as Angak’china, is one of the better-known Hopi Katsinam and is strongly associated with prayers for rain, moisture, and the fertility of the earth. The long flowing hair is traditionally understood in connection with falling rain, while the figure’s appearance and dance evoke the life-giving water needed for crops and the continued well-being of the community.

This carving is particularly meaningful as one of the final works created by Norbert Tewa, who passed away in 2026. It represents a late example of his work and his interpretation of this important Hopi Katsina.
