Burntwater
Tribe: Navajo (Diné)
Burntwater weaving by Laverne Tacheney, handwoven in fine yarn with natural gray and white wool, dark brown aniline dye, and hand-dyed vegetal colors including three shades of indigo blue, rabbit brush, Navajo tea, and three shaded of green created by combining indigo with rabbit brush. The detailed composition features six large Spider Woman cross motifs arranged in a balanced field, framed by an outer border of linked light blue blocks. Woven with exceptional precision and clarity, this piece was on the loom for a full year. Some of the vegetal-dyed yarn was originally dyed by the artist’s grandmother, Nellie Joe, then passed through her mother, Lillian Joe before being given to Laverne for use in this weaving.
