1980s hand-coiled and traditionally fired San Ildefonso Pueblo blackware plate. The highly polished surface features a matte Avanyu, or water serpent, encircling the plate’s interior, with finely etched rain, water, and geometric details. A small turquoise inlay forms the Avanyu’s eye.

The Avanyu is an important Pueblo symbol associated with water, rain, lightning, and the life-sustaining power of nature.

Titled “Spotted Water Serpent” on the reverse.
