1940s hand-coiled Hopi pottery vase, traditionally fired and hand-painted with natural pigments. The tall cylindrical form features a bold Eagle Tail design in black, cream, and red.

The Eagle Tail motif draws upon designs found on ancestral Sikyatki pottery and was prominently revived by Hopi-Tewa potters beginning in the late nineteenth century. Stylized feathers and sweeping curvilinear elements reference the eagle’s strength and spiritual importance within Hopi culture.
