1920s Storm Pattern

1920s Navajo Storm Pattern weaving, handwoven from handspun wool in natural gray, brown, black, and ivory, with accents of red aniline dye. The large-scale design features the Storm Pattern’s distinctive central composition connected to elements in each of the four corners.

The Storm Pattern emerged as a recognizable Navajo weaving style around the turn of the 20th century and was popularized through the influential catalogs of trader J.B. Moore at the Crystal Trading Post. Although interpretations vary, its central design, four corner elements, and connecting lines are often associated with the Navajo homeland, the four sacred mountains, and lightning or rain. It remains one of the most recognizable and collected designs in Navajo weaving.
