Hand-Carved and Painted Hopi “Shirt Ripper” (Novantsi-tsiloaqa) Kachina. His name roughly translates to “he who strips you / your clothes.” This uncommon Kachina is a runner who quite literally lives up to his name: “If he catches someone who is not running fast enough, he tears or rips whatever clothing he can grab, causing the unlucky runner to ‘lose his shirt.’” - Barton Wright, in Kachinas: A Hopi Artist's Documentary

“Old-style” Kachinas are traditionally made with a loop or string so they can be hung on a wall for display.
