Hummingbird Feather Sculpture
Tribe: Zuni
Hand-carved and hand-painted wooden hummingbird feather sculpture by Zuni artist Steven Lonjose, featuring three hummingbirds in flight among blooming flowers. The elongated feather form is carved from a single piece of wood, with the natural grain left visible through the center, framed by a black painted border with turquoise-colored accents. Each hummingbird is finely detailed with outstretched wings and vibrant coloration, hovering at blossoms that symbolize life, renewal, and the close relationship between pollinators and the natural world.
Hummingbirds hold special significance in Zuni culture, often associated with beauty, agility, and the bringing of blessings. The composition is balanced and rhythmic, with the birds and floral motifs flowing naturally along the length of the feather. Signed on the reverse, the piece includes a leather loop for wall display.
