Underworld Serpent Buckle
Tribe: Hopi
Sterling Silver Belt Buckle by renowned Hopi silversmith Victor Coochwytewa, created between 1976–1977. This striking piece features an overlay design depicting the Underworld Serpent emerging from a ceremonial pot, flanked by prayer feather (Pahos) mounds and a corn stalk. The Underworld Serpent, also known as the Horned Water Serpent, is a powerful creature believed to live deep in the earth, be associated with human sacrifice, occupy all bodies of water, and influence earthquakes and floods. Other than when the Water Serpent is represented during kiva ceremonies, it is said he does not surface unless his displeasure with human conduct has provoked him to a level that requires his intervention.
Coochwytewa’s masterful craftsmanship and precise overlay work elevate this design with depth, balance, and sacred symbolism. This buckle is featured on page 85 of Hopi Gold Hopi Silver by Zena Pearlstone, highlighting its significance.
Part of the historic Kopavi Collection, this buckle has never been previously owned.
