Small 1930s Paiute handwoven sumac basket. The coiled basketry foundation is densely overlaid with glass seed beads, predominantly white with accents of turquoise blue, green, red, and deep blue. Encircling geometric bands and stepped motifs follow the basket’s rounded form, while a concentric design decorates the base.

Beaded baskets such as this were created by Paiute artists in the Great Basin and Yosemite–Mono Lake region during the early 20th century. Combining traditional basketry with colorful imported glass beads, these small decorative works were often made for sale to visitors and collectors.
