Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Buckle
Tribe: Navajo (Diné)
1970s sterling silver western-style belt buckle by Navajo silversmith Johnson Todacheeny, set with a cluster of natural Sleeping Beauty turquoise from Arizona. The irregularly shaped stones are arranged in a dense cluster pattern, each held in a handmade serrated bezel and separated by applied silver drops. Stamped and repoussé-style leafwork frames the oval buckle.
The reverse is fitted for a 1.5" belt and bears Todacheeny’s pictorial hallmark. Johnson Todacheeny worked as a silversmith for the White Hogan shop, which was closely associated with influential Navajo jeweler Kenneth Begay.
