This large bowl is impressive, not only because of its sheer size, but the evidence of it being in use due to the visible wear on the interior. There is also some damage on the rim, but we do not find that it detracts from the overall beauty of this piece.
The Yokuts people represent between 40-60 tribal groups that inhabited the San Joaquin Valley and foothills of the Sierra Nevada in California. Often residing along rivers and streams, their baskets served the utilitarian purpose of gathering supplies in their verdant environment. Descendents of the Yokuts people continue today (though in a far smaller population), but no longer commonly practice the craft of basket weaving.
Basket materials include bunch grass as the foundational coiled warp, with a weft of sedge root, redbud, and brackenfern root.
