Hopi Deer Dancer Kachina

Hopi Deer Dancer, Sowi-ing, Kachina by Hopi carver Paul Sewemaenewa. Hand-carved from cottonwood root with exceptional detail, including the antlered headdress, feather elements, painted regalia, turquoise-colored necklace, bells, sash, and ceremonial staff. The figure stands on an elaborately carved base depicting a Hopi pueblo setting.

The Deer Dancer is associated with the deer and with prayers for rain, fertility, successful hunting, and the continued balance between people, animals, and the natural world. In Hopi ceremonial life, Deer Dancers appear in social and ceremonial dances that honor the deer and acknowledge its importance as a source of sustenance. Their movements traditionally imitate the alert, graceful behavior of the animal.
