1980s Turtle Tray

1980s Tohono O’odham Turtle Tray. Traditionally hand-coiled from natural yucca and dark devil’s claw over a bundled beargrass foundation, the basket features a large turtle design with a dark woven shell, outstretched legs, tail, and contrasting light-colored eyes. Dark stitching accents the gently undulating rim.

Animal designs inspired by the wildlife of the Sonoran Desert are an important part of Tohono O’odham basketry, connecting the work to the landscape and natural environment of the weaver’s homeland.
