This elegant Water Snipe Kachina, or Patszro, is carved from a single piece of cottonwood root and hand-painted by Hopi artist D’Armon Kootswatewa. A traditional Runner Kachina, Patszro symbolizes speed, agility, and the sacred presence of water. Known for challenging runners in ceremonial races, this figure is believed to help bring rain and promote a bountiful harvest.

Patszro is associated with the water bird known as the snipe, which frequents wetlands and marshy areas—symbolizing life-giving water, a central element in Hopi cosmology. Because water is so precious in the arid Southwest, any being connected to water, like the Water Snipe, is revered.
