Mona Laughing is from the area of Crystal, New Mexico, the home of vegetal dyes in Navajo weavings. Mona weaves Crystal, Wide Ruins, and multiple patterns.
Mona was born in 1945 at Indian Hospital in Fort Defiance, Arizona. She learned to weave from her great-grandmother Elsie Mark in the early 1970s.
She is a SWAIA fellowship winner and loves her craft/art of weaving. Mona has been featured in “Native People”, “Navajo Times” and “Native Art” magazines.
Mona is married to Kee Y Laughing and they have three daughters, three sons, and now 12 grandchildren.
Mona loves to travel and visit Farm Expo’s. Anything with farm animals and ranching, warms her heart. She is also an avid reader, with biographies being her favorite.
She has encouraged all her children to attend college, and four of her children have degrees! Three children have won the “Chief Manuelito” scholarship awards.
Mona is photographed with her daughter, Michele Laughing, who is an amazingly talented weaver herself. Her other daughter, Charlene Laughing, is also an accomplished weaver.
