Al Joe brings a contemporary edge to traditional Navajo designs, crafting jewelry in 14k gold and sterling silver using stamping, overlay, and shadowbox techniques. Al learned his jewelry-making skills from his uncle, Colbert Joe, and later attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. He currently resides in Winslow, Arizona, where he continues to create jewelry daily.
Al uses a variety of high-quality stones, including turquoise from Nevada’s Carico Lake Mine and Arizona’s renowned Morenci, Bisbee, and Kingman mines. He also incorporates high-quality Mediterranean coral into his work.
Al Joe was named Artist of the Year by the Indian Arts and Crafts Association (IACA) in both 2001 and 2009. He has passed down his expertise to his son, Bryan Joe, and grandsons, Derrick Joe and Ethan Joe.
