1970s Ram Necklace with Turquoise
Tribe: Hopi
Sterling silver overlay collar necklace made in 1976 by legendary Hopi artist Victor Coochwytewa. This remarkable piece features a central panel with a detailed bighorn ram design—symbolizing leadership and propagation of the herd—flanked by stylized bighorn sheep with rain clouds on their backs. Sheep hoofprints border the silver chain. Set with five cabochons of all-natural turquoise from the Old Man Mine (now known as the Turquoise Mountain Mine) in Arizona, each stone is rich in color and matrix.
A large matching pendant drops from the center panel, with a rain cloud and rain bordering the turquoise stone. The back of the necklace is stamped with the rare Kopavi Bicentennial bell hallmark, used only in 1976 to mark commemorative masterpieces, confirming this as one of the most exceptional pieces produced by Kopavi that year.
Part of the historic Kopavi Collection, this necklace has never been previously owned.
