Navajo Bird Pictorial Weaving
Tribe: Navajo (Diné)
Item #WN02819
Navajo Bird Pictorial weaving with a tall cornstalk rising from a Navajo wedding basket, surrounded by dozens of colorful birds perched on its leaves and in flight, including hummingbirds. Small plants dot the tan background, and the design is framed by a serrated brown and black border and a solid black outer border. Handwoven by Navajo artist, Mary Shepherd.
Often called the Tree of Life, the design centers on corn, one of the sacred plants of the Navajo, with the surrounding birds traditionally associated with the renewal of life.
