1940s Tohono O’Odham Basket

Tohono O’odham coiled basket with a broad, shallow tray form and an abstract geometric design worked in dark devil’s claw. The basket is constructed over a beargrass foundation, wrapped with yucca, with devil’s claw used to create the contrasting dark pattern.

The design develops outward from the center in sweeping, irregular geometric bands, continuing onto the low walls and rim. The warm golden coloration and softened contrast of the natural materials give the basket an attractive aged surface. This vintage basket has some condition issues consistent with its age, including areas of wear and minor loss.
