“Ancestors of the Rain” Painting

Acrylic on canvas painting by Hopi artist Delbridge Honanie depicting Shungopavi Village on Second Mesa with corn plants in the foreground. Above the pueblo, Hahai Wuhti (Grandmother Kachina) appears in the clouds, pouring water from a gourd to bring rain and blessings to the people. Flanking her are a male and female pair of Shalako Kachinas, their tall headdresses symbolizing rain clouds, with feathers radiating outward as prayer feathers. Together, these kachinas represent prayers for more rain and snow to nourish the crops and sustain the community.

Fitted with metal hanging wire on the back for wall display. Created in 1980 and part of the historic Kopavi Collection, this painting has never been previously owned.
