Corn Maiden and Longhair Jar

Hand-coiled Hopi pottery jar by Delmar Polacca featuring a Corn Maiden holding a basket of corn, representing sustenance, fertility, and the life-giving role of corn in Hopi culture. The reverse depicts two Longhair Kachinas holding rattles, shown in motion as they chant and dance for rain, a reference to their role in bringing moisture and ensuring agricultural renewal. The composition wraps fluidly around the vessel, combining low-relief carving with painted and polished surfaces in earthy red, tan, and black tones. Polacca’s signature style is evident in the dimensional figures, textured background, and balanced narrative design. Signed on the underside.
