1885 Zuni Polychrome Historic Jar. This jar is an excellent example of early traditional Zuni pottery. The jar is made of native clay and fired traditionally out of doors in cedar wood and sheep manure. The design features the traditional drawing of heart-line deer in their houses separated by rows of spirit birds. Two side panels depict coiled versions of pahoes (prayer feathers) that are used in prayer ceremonies. The Zuni saw their water jars as prayer offerings to the spirits for rain and moisture in all its forms.
