Trading Post Pictorial
Tribe: Navajo (Diné)
This exceptional pictorial weaving by renowned Navajo artist Florence Riggs depicts a vibrant trading post scene, capturing the essence of traditional Navajo daily life and commerce. Riggs, a master weaver from a multi-generational family of artisans, has been creating intricate textiles since the 1980s. She learned her craft from her grandmother, Laura Nez, and is celebrated as a leader in contemporary Navajo pictorial weaving, blending traditional Diné techniques with detailed storytelling.
In this piece, Navajo vendors are shown selling jewelry and rugs inside the trading post, set against a meticulously rendered brick background that adds depth and texture to the building's architecture, all rendered with remarkable precision and detail. A clever detail is the reversed spelling on the "Coke" machine and "Meat" sign, intentionally allowing one to read correctly from one side of the weaving and the other to read correctly from the opposite side.
Handwoven using traditional methods, this is a standout example of Florence Riggs' signature style.
