1970s Feather Plate

San Ildefonso blackware plate by Maria Martinez (1887–1980) and Popovi Da (1923–1971), her son and primary later collaborator, signed on the underside “Maria / Popovi.” Featuring a classic feather motif radiating around the interior, the design is achieved through matte-on-polished contrast, with highly burnished surfaces offset by finely painted feather forms that create a rhythmic, sunburst-like composition. The plate has a shallow, rounded form with a smooth, even finish and subtle tonal variation typical of traditionally fired blackware. Made circa 1970, this example dates to the final year of their collaboration, just one year before Popovi Da’s death.
