Bisbee Deer Dancer Collar
Tribe: Hopi
Sterling Silver Necklace with Hopi Overlay Depictions of Deer Dancer Kachinas Emerging from the San Francisco Peaks, Flanked by Stylized Mountain Ranges and Deer Tracks. The Deer Dancers are shown at the beginning of their journey, descending from the mountains to visit the Hopi villages. This striking collar necklace is a rare work by Hopi artist Phillip Honanie and features a large natural Bisbee turquoise stone from Arizona set in a heavy silver pendant. The pendant is shaped like a deer track, with the Bisbee turquoise forming the negative space and the overlay designs flanking the stone representing the imprint of the hoof itself.
Made in the 1970s, the necklace is a masterful example of Honanie’s precision in overlay work: blending symbolism, ceremonial storytelling, and fine craftsmanship.
This piece is featured on page 88 of Hopi Gold Hopi Silver by Zena Pearlstone and is discussed in detail in the “Ceremonies” section, highlighting its importance as an important work of 20th-century Hopi jewelry.
Part of the historic Kopavi Collection, this necklace has never been previously owned.
