Buffalo Social Dancer, also known as Kocha Mosairu, by Hopi carver Arvin Saufkie, signed on the base. The Buffalo Dancer is described as a social dancer, and is associated with winter ceremonial dances, often the January dances on the Hopi mesas. The figure is carved in an active dance posture and holds a bow and rattle, with detailed painted clothing, feather elements, and a natural wood base. Buffalo figures are associated with strength, endurance, and prayers connected to abundance and the life-sustaining importance of game animals within Hopi tradition. The doll is a one-piece carving, traditionally carved from a single piece of cottonwood root.
