First Girl Pin and Pendant
Tribe: Hopi
Sterling silver overlay pendant depicting the symbolic figure of First Girl, from Phillip Honanie’s “Emergence Jewelry” series. Created in 1976 and based on Honanie’s original painting Emergence, the design reflects the origin story of the Hopi people emerging into the present world through Sipapu, the Hopi place of emergence.
This stylized form represents the first female child brought into existence and is rendered in precise overlay work, with bold geometric lines representing rain clouds and water. The First Girl wears the traditional butterfly whorls hairstyle of a Hopi maiden. The pendant doubles as a pin and is hung on a handmade 20" Hopi link chain.
Part of the historic Kopavi Collection, this pendant has never been previously owned.
