Hopi Left-Handed Hunter Kachina

Hopi Left-Handed Hunter Kachina, Siyangephoya, by Hopi carver Norbert Tewa. Hand-carved from cottonwood root and mounted on a natural cottonwood base. The figure is depicted with his bow and hunting equipment characteristically reversed, along with detailed painted regalia, a quiver, turquoise-colored necklace, and traditional mask elements.

Siyangephoya is known as the Left-Handed Hunter, an accomplished hunting Kachina whose equipment is carried opposite from the usual arrangement. Because his gear is reversed, he must draw his arrows in an unconventional manner. Despite this unusual presentation, and the distinctive bobbing, small-stepped movement traditionally associated with him, he is regarded as a highly skilled and powerful hunter.

This carving is particularly meaningful as one of the final works created by Norbert Tewa, who passed away in 2026. It represents a late example of his work and of his interpretation of this distinctive Hopi Katsina.
