1960s Woodland Animals Necklace
Tribe: Zuni
1960s sterling silver bead necklace by Porfilio Sheyka (Zuni, 1938-1982) featuring a series of hand-cut inlaid animal figures inlaid with jet, mother of pearl shell, natural American turquoise, Mediterranean coral, and spiny oyster shell. The necklace includes a variety of animals such as bear, rabbit, turtle, beaver, skunk, and other woodland forms, each carefully shaped and brought to life with precise channel inlay. A larger central wolf anchors the composition. The silver beads show a natural patina that complements the contrast of the inlay. Well-executed example 20th century pictorial Zuni inlay work with a cohesive, narrative arrangement of figures.
