Turquoise Mountain Lizard Buckle
Tribe: Hopi
Sterling silver belt buckle featuring Victor Coochwytewa’s classic lizard motif, set with a large natural turquoise stone from the Turquoise Mountain mine in Arizona. The bold turquoise cabochon is framed in a clean bezel and centered within Victor’s finely engraved lizard design. In Hopi symbolism, the lizard is associated with agility, survival, and the ability to navigate between worlds, making it a fitting emblem for protection and adaptability.
Victor Coochwytewa (1922–2011), one of the most celebrated Hopi silversmiths of the 20th century, was a pioneer of modern Hopi overlay and is known for his impeccable precision, balance, and distinctive use of Hopi animal symbolism. This buckle is a striking example of his craftsmanship, combining strong traditional Hopi imagery with a beautifully chosen natural turquoise stone.
Part of the historic Kopavi Collection, this buckle has never been previously owned.
