Tufted Sheep Weaving
Tribe: Navajo (Diné)
Navajo tufted sheep weaving by Emily Malone, featuring a sheep design on a natural gray background with black and ivory borders. The weaving is reversible, with a raised, tufted sheep on one side and a shaved sheep design on the reverse. A feather motif is woven into the lower border, adding a simple decorative element to this small pictorial weaving.
"The rug is an example of a Tufted Rug. It has been carefully crafted through a process involving shearing, washing, hand-carding, and hand-spinning the wool from my flock of sheep. The detailed weaving with Churro wool, known for its long strands similar to mohair, results in durable and visually striking artwork. Each fiber is carefully prepared and thoughtfully arranged, as it is all handmade from start to finish. The creation of the Tufted Rug requires a lot of time and effort to create. Attached is an example of the Navajo churro sheep that’s sheared annually to create the Tug
in Rug and other intricately woven items." - Emily Malone
