Broadface Whipper Kachina
Tribe: Hopi
Hand-Carved Old-Style Hopi Broadface Whipper Kachina.
The Broadface Whipper Kachina, or Wuyak-kuita, plays an important role in discipline and order during Hopi ceremonies, often guiding or correcting other Kachinas and dancers with his yucca whips. His bold appearance and actions are meant to teach respect, attentiveness, and adherence to tradition. Old-style Kachinas are traditionally made with a loop or string so they can be hung on a wall for display.
