Sampson Gray is a renowned Navajo and Zuni silversmith born on February 7, 1958 in Ramah, New Mexico, which borders the Zuni Reservation. His grandfather owned 2,000 acres of land where he raised cattle and horses, and as the only grandson, Sampson inherited the ranch. Sampson, with his wife and children, moved to Phoenix, AZ but he continues to return home each summer to spend time on the family land.
Raised in a very traditional Navajo lifestyle, Sampson learned much of his skill from his mother, Annie C. Gray. By the age of 12 he was already helping his mother with her work, and by 16, he started making jewelry on his own.
Sampson is best known for his exquisite silver and gold boxes and pots, as well as his impressive silver overlay work. He has received numerous awards for these detailed silver boxes. In 2025, he won second place at the annual Heard Museum show for his Yei be chai box. The previous year, he won for his Monument Valley box.
Sampson’s work holds deep meaning for him as he continues his mother’s artistic tradition. “It’s fulfilling and I am amazed with the elegance when the piece is finished,” said Sampson. He has recently begun teaching his son Orson, the art of jewelry making, carrying the family legacy forward.
