Antique Navajo (circa 1930s) Canyon Diablo Weaving. This design is a cross between a Red Mesa and a Teec Nos Pos. This piece was hand woven by Navajo weaver, Julia Joe. Julia was very well-known in her time and Lorenzo Hubbell commissioned many weavings from her. She was active in the early 20th century and is known to have woven some of the largest Navajo weavings ever created. Julia’s husband, Sam Joe, would construct custom looms to accommodate the size of such large weavings. One of Julia’s weavings took five years of her life to create, often weaving seven days a week from sunup to sundown. This weaving has been stored in the safe at the Hubbell Trading Post in Winslow, Arizona since the 1930s. It only recently became available from the family of Patricia Kinsolving Smith who was an owner and manager of the Hubbell Trading Post in Winslow. This is the first time this weaving is being offered for sale to the general public. This weaving is in excellent condition and would make an incredible floor rug.
