Coyote Placing the Stars Basket

This hand-coiled sumac pictorial basket by Sally Black illustrates the Navajo tale of how the stars came into the sky, as part of the Navajo Creation Story. The intricate design features a Navajo Medicine Man carefully placing stars into the heavens. Below him, a mischievous coyote, impatient with the Medicine Man's meticulous placement of each star, convinces him to throw all the stars at once, creating random patterns in the sky. The basket's design also depicts the transition from day to night, highlighting the Morning Star in blue and the Evening Star in red.
