Ces premiers tissages étaient communément appelés « couvertures de chef » parce qu'ils étaient très chers, et on pensait que seuls les chefs d'autres tribus, ou d'autres riches autochtones et commerçants pouvaient se les permettre. Ces couvertures de chef coûtaient entre un mois de salaire et près d'un an de salaire pour la plupart des individus de l'époque. Leur chaleur et leur durabilité en ont fait des couvertures recherchées parmi les tribus autochtones et les chefs militaires américains. Les couvertures Chief ont cessé d'être créées lorsque la demande s'est effondrée en raison de l'arrivée de couvertures tissées à la machine moins chères apportées par les chemins de fer à la fin des années 1800. Pour cette raison, les tisserands Navajo sont progressivement passés au tissage de tapis plutôt que de couvertures au tournant du 20e siècle. Il reste désormais peu de couvertures de chef en bon état et elles sont très collectionnables.
